| The Cabin ... Back To Pioneer Room |
|
Pioneers had to hack a living out of the wilderness - including a place to live. Tents, log cabins and sod houses were the residences of choice. Tents could be put up in a hurry to provide immediate protection from the weather. Sod houses were cheap to build and provided great insulation against summer heat and winter cold. Log cabins provided the ideal physical and environmental protection but took much longer to build. The art of log cabin is still alive and well today. Visit The Timberman for a taste of modern log cabin making. |

Building: Log cabins usually had one or two rooms with the logs laid horizontally for the walls. The French style used vertical logs driven into the ground to form the walls ... the same technique used in most old west forts. Some cabins had no windows as they were difficult to make and there was little material to fill the opening. Some log cabins did have windows using either greased paper or actual glass if available. |
